Different customs
In South India, most people eat with their right hand only, even sloppy food like curry! The left hand isn’t used for eating or touching others, as it is used for cleaning oneself after going to the loo. They don’t use toilet paper, but use water instead.
In our orphanage, for reasons of hygiene each child has their own stainless steel plate.

Washing
‘Taking a shower’ in India can mean anything from just that, to dipping in the river, pouring water over oneself with a bucket & ‘dipper’ (a small plastic jug), using any available standpipe, or even rain puddles!
While poor people can often be seen ‘taking a shower’ in the open air, it is never in the nude. Indians are extremely modest, and if they are likely to be seen, will always bathe wearing trousers, a sari, or at least their underclothes.
