Within a year there were too many for the house. Through a generous friend, John bought an acre of land in a paddy field. It’s only building was a cowshed. So he fixed up the thatched roof and floor, and the children moved in.
The cowshed became dormitory, schoolroom, dining room and church. By then there were fifty, and the mosquitoes were bad at night. A bore-hole was sunk to provide water. Teachers came in
during the day. A cook was found. Numbers soared to over 100, and still the mosquitoes were bad. The children were almost sleeping on top of each other.
Then a very little money came, and building work began. But it was two whole years before the first wing was completed.
Today there are over 10 homes across India.
